Summarize the purpose of your Genius Hour project in 140 characters.
The purpose of my group’s Genius Hour Project was to tie-dye t-shirts and sell them to our friends and family to raise money for our local animal shelter.
Explain the process of your Genius Hour project. Be reflective. Be contemplative. Explain and describe your journey. (No Less Than Three FULL Paragraphs.)
For our project, my group and I tie-dyed t-shirts and sold them for about $7-$8 to our family and friends, and we donated the money that we raised to the Almost Home Animal Shelter.
Our plan was to sell the t-shirts only to our family and friends because we weren’t sure if we would sell many. But the words got out to many of the students at our school, and they wanted to buy a shirt to help out. We were so happy to hear that the students wanted to buy our t-shirts and wanted to support our project. All together we sold around 50 shirts and raised over $300.
The process of making the shirts was probably the most stressful part of the whole project. We all pitched in some money to help pay for the white shirts, and we each had some dye at our houses that we never used before. We stayed up all night making a majority of the t-shirts and finished up the next day.
On May 21st, Marleigh, Avery, Kimi, Erica, and I went to the Almost Home Animal Shelter to donate the money that we raised. The owners seemed to be astonished when they saw the amount of money that we had. One asked how we raised the money, and we told them about our Genius Hour Project. They were very thankful for our act of kindness and support.
The intention For Genius Hour is NOT only to learn, but ALSO to share your knowledge with others who can and will benefit from your learning. How did you share your learning? What do you hope the result might be? (No Less Than Two Full Paragraphs.)
We shared our learning through making the t-shirts. We have a little symbol on our shirts that represent our project and the animal. It is an animal snout with a heart nose; it shows our love for the animals and that we think that the animals should get all the love they can get. I am happy to walk into school seeing people wearing our shirts. It shows how many people were supporting our project and the Almost Home Animal Shelter.
I am hope that by selling our shirts, we made an impact on the community and the animal shelter. We were happy to help our local animal shelter and the people working there. We got a chance to talk to the people that worked there about our project. We also got to visit all of the cats and dogs. I really hope that more people go out and support and make an impact on our community.
If you could do anything different with your Genius Hour project what would you do differently and why? (No less than two full paragraphs.)
I would have liked to help our group out more, but it was hard to find time to work together at the same time because we were busy with extracurricular activities. We all pitched in to help get the t-shirts and the dye, but Kimi and Avery made a majority of the t-shirts. It would have been a lot easier on them if we were all working on them together..
Another thing that I wish we could've done is that we could've visited the animal shelter every once in a while; like maybe visit every weekend or even every other weekend. We could have spent time there volunteering to help take care of the animals. It would have made a great impact on the shelter. It would have been nice to help out the managers.
Reflect on what you did well during this Genius Hour process? Note your successes and accomplishments. (No less than two full paragraphs.)
I think that selling the shirts was our biggest success considering we didn't think that we would sell very many. We had to go out and buy more shirts to dye when people kept coming up to us and asking if they could buy a shirt. This made a big impact on our Genius Hour Project. It really pushed us forward and got us where we wanted to be. We accomplished our main goals.
Another accomplishment we had was the amount of money we raised and got to donate. After all the shirts were made and sold, we made over $300. We sold 50 shirts. It was worth going through the work to finally donate to the shelter, and then getting to meet all of the friendly animals!
